We will begin by presenting the central features of the mechanism by which the nitrogenase FeMo-cofactor is activated to bind and reduce N2, as revealed by recent work by ‘the team’ comprising Seefeldt, Dean, Raugei, and coworkers, and Lukoyanov in the NU laboratory. We will then focus on the roles played by the components of the catalytic active-site, [Fe7MoCS9] FeMo-cofactor – the CFe6 Core, with its mysterious and unparalleled central carbon, and the ‘capping’ metal ions, Fe and Mo.
