Biomass upgrading, an everlasting topic in the chemical industry, newly catches researchers’ attention because of the rapid development of electrocatalysis. Compared with thermal chemical conversion, electrochemical conversion of biomass requires milder reaction condition, less reaction time, even can reach higher conversion and selectivity. Besides that, typically, electrochemical hydrogen production is coupled with OER, a reaction required high energy consumption and produced nugatory product. Thus, it is significantly meaningful to improve conventional water electrolysis by replacing OER with biomass electro-oxidation. Even though electrochemical biomass upgrading has proved to be a promising project in industrial manufacture, the effect factors and mechanism of this reaction are still unclear. We explore several influence factors for electrochemical biomass upgrading, which may play the guiding role in further researches. Furthermore, we fabricate a cobalt-based catalyst towards hybrid water electrolysis. In alkaline media, it exhibits excellent performance with 100% conversion and almost 100% product selectivity.
