The goal of this study is to develop innovative ways of incorporating principle-based safety education into an undergraduate chemistry course to support students to build on their safety knowledge and safety ethics in independent laboratory based work. The importance of laboratory safety in undergraduate education has been widely recognized. However, there are significant gaps in the literature on how to effectively teach chemical and lab safety that need to be addressed. <br/>The objective of the study is to improve students’ understanding and practice of safety in the laboratory by re-designing the curriculum of the sequence of courses, Organic Chemistry I, and Organic Chemistry II.  Emerging findings from the study indicate that students taking the first college sequence in organic chemistry have minimal or no prior experience with laboratory safety and chemical safety information resources. <br/>We believe that this study will provide an example of how to effectively adapt the risk management tool, Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), to teach a principle-based strategy for risk assessment using the RAMP concept. It will also provide a model of how to easily incorporate laboratory and chemical safety education into an existing laboratory course.
