Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) is a special class of polymers, which has a polymeric backbone and repeating monomeric ionic liquids (ILs) units attached as pendants. PILs have dual properties i.e., it has the properties of ionic liquids (ILs) (i.e., high conductivity, better thermal and chemical stability, and tailor-made functionality) and the intrinsic properties of the polymer (i.e., mechanical stability). This property of PILs makes it a good candidate for various applications such as stable-ion conductors, membranes for gas separations, and sorbents.<br/>In the past, an ample amount of research was done on the swelling of PIL dissolved in ILs but a handful amount of work was done on PILs dissolved in neutral solvents or salt solutions. Thus, a series of simple monomeric ILs were synthesized containing styrene as a backbone tethered with imidazolium moiety with either alkyl or ether linkages. These monomers were then polymerized in the presence or absence of an initiator. Polymers were then placed in different solvents and salt solutions to test their swelling properties. This presentation will show how the swelling ratio is affected by changes in the different side chains (alkyl versus ether), type of solvent, reaction condition (presence or absence of initiator), and solvent polarity with varying dipole moments.
