CO2, the main product in hydrocarbon combustion, is undesired because its excess in the atmosphere results in the increase of atmospheric temperature. To address this challenge, our lab works on designing porous framework materials for capturing and transforming CO2. Titania metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), particularly the MIL-125 class, has shown to uptake and phototransform CO2 into higher value chemicals (e.g. formate) with moderate efficiencies. Our effort is to improve the photocatalytic properties of this class of MOFs by varying their composition, while keeping the crystal structure constant in the form the form of isoreticular multivariate MOFs. Here, we present the variation of the composition of MIL-125, using a solid solution approach, based on terephthalate and its derivatives with varied electronic structure (σ- and π-donors). We explore the effects of the linker structure and composition with respect to the CO2 photoreductive efficiency.
