Quinazolinones are valuable synthetic targets due to their diverse pharmacological activities. Many current methods to access this fused heterocyclic motif, however, require elevated temperatures, toxic reagents, or substituted benzoic acid-derived precursors. To address these challenges, our laboratory has designed an iminyl radical cyclization to close the pyrimidinone ring. This strategy uses an organic dye and light to generate radicals from azide substrates under mild conditions. This presentation will describe our recent progress in methodology development with undergraduate research students, including reaction optimization, scope studies, and safety considerations. The benefits of cultivating a scientific community will also be highlighted.
