High temperature resin transfer molding (RTM) and additive manufacturing of composites have many advantages over traditional autoclave prepreg materials, mainly in dimensional tolerances for complex components, reproducibility in manufacturing, and rapid prototyping, which translates to cost savings. This work evaluates current synthetic progress for high temperature RTM and multifunctional materials for aerospace applications. These high temperature materials are developed from a unique class of molecules known as helicenes, namely ortho-fused aromatic rings with remarkable optical and mechanical properties useful for high temperature applications, and specifically for strain sensing applications. These polymers will be evaluated in the future to determine their physical and chemical properties and their thermo-oxidative stability relative to commercially available options will be evaluated.
