Synthetic dyes, specifically those made from organic compounds, were the foundation of the series of reactions that later became the subdivision of organic chemistry. We have persued the synthesis of known and novel dyes as reference materials for cultural objects, as templates for novel synthetic pathways, and as vehicles to explore electrosynthetic reactions. Several research projects will be highlighted to demonstrate how these colorful targets can capture undergraduate researchers interest, the chemistry can provide them intellectual challenges, and the collaborative opportunities can enhance the reach and application of organic synthesis.
