Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes are of great interest due to their luminescence, stability, and possible application as bioimaging agents. In the present study, two rhenium(I) complexes, fac-[Re(Cl)(NN)(CO)3], where NN= 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline and 4,7-diamine-1,10-phenanthroline, were synthesized and characterized by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The photophysical properties of the rhenium(I) complexes were studied using absorption and emission spectroscopy. A 3MLCTRe→NN transition and a secondary IL emission were observed for both complexes. Electron donating group(s) on phenanthroline led to differences in luminescent consistent with the energy gap law. Additional changes in photophysical properties were observed upon changing pH.
