The neopicolinamide fungicides have been developed by Corteva Agriscience to target plant pathogens within the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota families. Globally, these fungicides provide farmers new solutions across multiple geographies and product markets, and they have very favorable regulatory, toxicological and environmental profiles. To support regulatory studies during their product development, radiotracers and stable isotopes of the picolinamide fungicides were prepared to enable these studies. Radiotracers incorporating carbon-14 allow for low detection limits of metabolites generated in environmental, animal and plant studies, and stable isotopes incorporating carbon-13 and nitrogen-15 provided unique isotopic fingerprints for mass spectrometry and metabolite identification. The isotope labeling strategy for neopicolinamide fungicides involved isotopically labeling their ring systems such that metabolites and degradants from in vivo metabolism studies and environmental degradation studies could be tracked by radio-detection techniques and high-resolution mass spectrometry to enable metabolite identification.
