Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is a strict anaerobic bacterium notorious for developing resistance against common antibiotics. This study will focus on testing extracts from Juglans nigra bark (black walnut tree bark), Asarum canadense (wild ginger), and Allium sativum (garlic) directly against P. gingivalis in an attempt to find an all-natural treatment against gingivitis. Extracts were derived via steam distillation followed by organic extraction with a variety of organic solvents. A broad antibacterial study of each specific extract against P. gingivalis, establishes a baseline of which natural product extracts may contain antibacterial properties. A more in-depth study towards the end goal of separating individual components through chromatography is currently being explored. A full analysis of the bacterial assay will be presented.
