Power plants are the largest source of greenhouse gas pollution in the energy sector with almost 40% of global energy-related emissions. The capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from powerplants is requisite for its conversion or sequestration. Several water-based solvent technologies have been deployed for the post-combustion CO2 capture processes to reduce CO2 emissions in the industrial settings. These technologies require prohibitively high energy for regeneration. Our group at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has identified single-component water-lean solvents for CO2 capture N-(2-ethoxyethyl)-3-morpholinopropan-1-amine (2-EEMPA) to be a drop-in replacement for aqueous amines. This presentation will provide details of post-combustion CO2 capture performance including vapor−liquid equilibria, sorption kinetics, and highlight durability of these non-aqueous diamine-based solvents for CO2 capture. A techno-economic evaluation of CO2-Binding Organic Liquids (CO2BOLs), all water-lean solvents, with an estimated carbon capture cost below $40/tonne CO2 at 90-97% carbon capture rate will be discussed.
