In this presentation, Prof. Dionysiou will give a comprehensive overview of the Z-scheme photocatalytic systems. The development of Z-scheme photocatalytic materials, from the liquid-phase to all-solid-state, and later to direct Z-scheme, will be summarized with an emphasis on the technical advancements of direct Z-scheme heterojunctions. The fundamental principles of direct Z-scheme structure, including the formation mechanism and charge transfer processes, will be presented in depth and compared with other conventional photocatalytic heterojunctions (i.e., types I, II, and III). Material design and synthesis strategies for novel Z-scheme heterostructures will be summarized with a focus on sulfide-based photocatalysts. The application of Z-scheme photocatalysts to degrade pollutants in water will be highlighted, with particular reference to the removal of contaminants of emerging concern. The reactive species generated by Z-scheme photocatalysts and the degradation mechanisms of contaminants will be discussed. Finally, this presentation will reveal the limitations of current studies and conclude with suggestions for future research.
