Extraction of plant material using conventional organic solvents such as hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol have presented challenges such as long extraction periods, safety issues, toxicity, environmental impact, and the costly and large volumes of solvents required. Deep eutectic solvents are considered environmentally friendly and a green method for bioactive compound extraction from medicinal plants. They are also seen as a safe alternative for nutritional, pharmaceutical, and other applications. However, there is little knowledge regarding the extraction efficiency of deep eutectic solvents compared to conventional organic solvents. This study compared a deep eutectic and conventional solvents' extraction efficiencies on Hibiscus sabdarifa and industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa) through the extract yield, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) profiles, and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analysis. Research findings will be the basis for future studies on other plant materials.
