The EPA includes heavy metal ions in the National Primary Drinking Water Regulations (NPDWR) due to their contributions to increased risks of cancer, liver and kidney damage, allergic dermatitis, and other health issues. This project focuses on the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous sources using Isatin Sulfonic Acid (ISA) Phenyl Thiosemicarbazone (PTSC) and Phenyl Semicarbazone (PSC) chelating resins. The ligands are immobilized onto resin beads via anion exchange at various percent by mass loadings. The chelating resins are contacted for specified periods of time with solutions containing the metal ion of interest at environmentally relevant pH values. The solutions prior to contact with the resin and after contact are analyzed via ICP-OES and the metal ion concentrations are used to calculate dry weight distribution values (D<sub>w</sub>) to measure the removal of the metal ion from the solution. It is anticipated that these resins will be successful at removing heavy metal ions from the solutions, and differences in the ion removal will arise due to differences in the ligand structures and resin loadings. Remediation of metal contaminated aqueous sources is thought to be possible using this method.
