This work uses numerical simulation and analytical theory to characterize the single particle dynamics and emergent collective behavior of active colloidal matter confined to one-dimensional (1D) geometries. With the miniaturization and advancement of microfluidic devices there is increasing interest in controlling the transport properties of single file active matter. This work is relevant to a broad range of systems where self-propelled particles are confined to 1D because our approach can be extended to characterize the transport of active particles in confined biological environments such as within capillaries or cargo transport along microtubules. This research will lead to a deeper understanding of non-equilibrium systems and provide a template for tuning collective dynamics under extreme confinement.
