Halogenation of an aromatic compound is one of the most widely employed reaction in medicinal chemistry. Polyhalogenation of aromatic compounds works well when the aromatic compound contains a strong electron-donating substituent such as an amine or alcohol. However, polyhalogenation of an aromatic compound that contains a weaker electron-donating group is more difficult and may require acidic activation of the halogenating agent. In this investigation, we aim to explore the use of a visible-light photoredox catalyst (VLPC) to activate a halogenating agent in the absence of an external acid in order to polyhalogenate acetanilide as a representative aromatic compound with an amide substituent that has medicinal relevance. The results of screening VLPC organic dyes for polyhalogenation of acetanilide in the presence of a halogenating agent will be presented.
