In order to address increasing energy demands, new technology must be developed that curbs our reliance on fossil fuels. Artificial Photosynthesis (AP) is a process that uses solar energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The resulting gases can then be used as fuel sources. Our group has developed several iron catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of AP that are both active and stable in aqueous solutions. These homogeneous systems for HER can then be immobilized on semiconductor supports to generate highly active heterogeneous materials that are stable and reusable. Herein we report a series of iron complexes that are immobilized on metal oxides and sp<sup>2 </sup>carbon surfaces and probe their activity for hydrogen evolution.
