A number of advanced polymer, inorganic and hybrid materials have been developed, each with its respective set of benefits and limitations. Specifically, polyimides, ionic liquids (ILs) and related materials, polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs), Trooger’s Base (TB)-containing polymers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and thermally rearranged (TR) polymers are at the forefront of advanced membrane materials. Over the past several years, we have developed a versatile approach which integrates the benefits of these structurally diverse materials into a new hybrid material platform, high performance (HP) ionenes into a single polymer backbone. Furthermore, these materials are also able to hold ILs within their structures through strong coulombic interactions. Using the knowledge gained in these past studies, we have developed a deep, fundamental understanding as to how to construct HP ionenes that show improved permeability and/or selectivity for gas pairs of interest (e.g., CO<sub>2</sub>/CH<sub>4</sub>) compared to other ionic and neutral polymer membranes with similar structural elements.
