The unique properties of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have enabled their increased use for a range of environmental, medicinal, and commercial applications. Owing to their unique antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of the most widely used ENMs, leading to their release into the environment during production, use, and disposal. Upon encountering environmental systems, AgNPs form eco-coronas that can lead to subsequent physicochemical transformations (e.g., aggregation, dissolution, oxidation, sulfidation, etc.), and which ultimately affect their environmental fate, transport, and toxicity. Eco-coronas are comprised of a complex mixture of proteins, metabolites, and organic molecules. While protein coronas have been widely studied, additional studies are needed that explore coronas composed of metabolites, organic molecules (natural and pollutants), and mixtures of all three. As a result, we have developed a model system to begin exploring the AgNP-metabolite corona using the environmentally relevant bacterium, Caulobacter crescentus. C. crescentus has two distinct morphotypes that dominate at different cell culture densities and have varying metabolic requirements and outputs. Thus, the unique cell cycle of C. crescentus allows us to evaluate AgNP-metabolite coronas of varying composition. Preliminary data demonstrating metabolite-mediated changes in AgNP dissolution behaviors will be presented.
