Lithium-conducting solid-state electrolyte Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is particularly attractive due to its relatively large ionic conductivity and stability over a large range of voltages, among other advantages. In this work, the effect of excess lithium from 5% to 20% in Ta-doped LLZO was systematically explored, as was the method of preparing the precursor powder and the atmosphere during heating. Temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to characterize the formation of Ta-LLZO from 25 C to 1000 C in air and inert nitrogen atmosphere. Any intermediates formed were identified. The material was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic light scattering to verify the size distribution of the starting material and relate that to the formation conditions of LLZO. In this work, we also seek to correlate the materials formed to their ionic conductivity and compare them to the less-conductive tetragonal-structure LLZO. The understanding of how this solid-state electrolyte forms will have significant implications for the efficient development of its synthesis for higher conductivity LLZO.
