The catalytic activity of iridium nanoparticles (6-8 nm) encapsulated in halloyiste nanoscrolls (Ir@Hal) was investigated as a heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of secondary amines via reductive amination. The nanocomposite was prepared using an environmentally friendly wet chemical synthetic method, involving the reduction of IrCl3 ● 3H2O with NaBH4 in the presence of trisodium citrate (capping agent) and halloysite. The Ir@Hal nanocomposite proved to be an efficient green catalyst for the reductive amination of aldehydes and ketones with a variety of primary aromatic amines. A diverse array of secondary amines were synthesized in high yields using ambient conditions. The Ir@Hal was used in catalytic amounts and demonstrated selectivity towards the reductive amination of aldehydes and ketones, without generating undesirable by-products. Ir@Hal could also be easily recovered and reused. The catalyst could be recycled for three consecutive cycles without a significant decrease in yield. Details of the Ir@Hal nanocomposite synthesis and the scope of the Ir@Hal catalyzed reductive amination will be presented.
