The combination of polymers (as soft materials) with 2D structures (as hard materials) creates opportunities to create tailored interfaces with properties implications ranging from mechanics to tailored electronic structure and function.  This presentation will describe the impact of polymers on 2D materials, where the polymers contain pendant zwitterions, aromatic hydrocarbons, or both.  Probing these interfaces with microscopic techniques reveals the importance of both physical (i.e., wettability) and electronic (i.e., dipole interactions) interactions at this hard-soft interface, which for 2D materials includes both graphene as well as transition metal dichalcogenide structures.   For example, as will be described, sulfobetaine- and phosphorylcholine-substituted polymer zwitteirons, which are well-known for their advantageous properties as biomaterials and non-fouling effects on surfaces, have surprisingly significant influences on the electronic properties of 2D materials.
