Background: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a high-performance, semi-crystalline polymer that is known for its high chemical resistance, mechanical and dielectric properties, as well as its ability to perform under elevated temperatures. PEEK is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Surgical Implant Applications and is commonly used for many other biomedical applications, including spine treatment, orthopedic tools/products, and dental implants. Carlo S. Emolaga et al. have previously characterized the 3D printability of neat PEEK filament demonstrating the optimal printing parameters for mechanical integrity. Purpose/Hypothesis: We are focusing specifically on optimizing the properties of Carbon Fiber (CF) reinforced PEEK, as well as a custom carbon nanotube composite, along with their resulting biocompatibility in medical applications. These composites change properties including strength, rigidity, working temperature, and weight of the samples. Methods: Specifically, we present the 3D printing of three commercial PEEK Filaments (ThermaX™ PEEK, CarbonX PEEK+CF10, and CarbonX PEEK+CF20) and a lab-made CNT variant via Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) techniques. Thermomechanical, processability, topology, and antimicrobial characterization are presented, along with optimization of printing the 3D printing parameters of such PEEK composites and the dielectric spectroscopy of the final products. Results/Expected Outcomes: These composites should increase strength, rigidity, and working temperature, and decrease in weight. Conclusion/Contribution/Impact: This work will benefit the medical field by providing PEEK with better properties that will benefit its use in bone and cartilage replacement. Allowing stronger, lighter, and cleaner implants.
