Catalytic conversion of CO2 under reducing conditions is readily possible over classic late transition metal (TM) catalysts. However, control of product distributions by tuning the degree of reduction and hydrogenation remain problematic. Achieving controlled CO2 activation and hydrogenation requires new materials that exhibit markedly different surface chemistry in comparison to late TMs. This presentation will focus upon the surface chemistry of binary non-noble TM and p-element intermetallic compounds (IMC) in the context of controlling surface oxophilicity for C-O cleavage, bulk bonding for hydrogenation activity, and CO adsorption for C-C coupling or preferential desorption. Critical trends in IMC surface chemistry as a function of element selection and fundamental electronic properties will be reviewed. This understanding provides a road map for new catalytic materials to be developed.
