Solid-state batteries (SSB), consisting of an inorganic solid electrolyte and a lithium metal electrode, promise to enhance energy and power density, and safety compared to current lithium-ion batteries. The development of practical SSBs is predicated upon comprehensive understanding and mechanistic design of myriad interfaces and architectures within the system. Fundamental understanding of the dependence of heterogeneity-driven effects on lithium plating/stripping rates, the associated asymmetry and evolution of mechanical stress and temperature fields is critical. In this presentation, the underlying role of microstructural and interfacial heterogeneities on the reaction kinetics, electrochemical-thermal-mechanics interaction, morphological growth, and the origin of instability will be examined in an exemplar SSB with an inorganic solid electrolyte.
