<br/>Metallic nanoparticles have attracted great interest for their demonstrated electrical, optical, magnetic, electronic and catalytic properties. In recent years, multimetallic nanoscale materials with complex structures are being pursued for the interplay among different components, which give rise to synergistic effects. To prepare complex structures with atomic scale and nanoscale precisions, post-synthetic transformative techniques are commonly adopted when direct synthesis is not convenient or straightforward. Galvanic replacement (GR) is a versatile tool to prepare bimetallic nanostructures with distinct architectural features from monometallic templates; however, there is a lack of knowledge of how nanoscale templates composed of more than one metal react and transform during GR. Here, three different types bimetallic nanostructures are studied as templates for GR – mixed alloy PdNi nanoparticles, core@shell Pd@Ni nanoparticles and Ni@Pd nanoparticles. Each were directly synthesized then titrated with different volumes of HAuCl<sub>4</sub> to identify both the redox behavior and architectural evolution. Products at different stages of GR were captured and characterized by analytical electron microscopy. Broadly, the selectivity and mechanism of GR provides guidance into precise engineering of the composition, architecture, and surface chemistry towards materials with complex structure, composition, and, in turn, function. This research also allows comparisons to GR with monometallic templates to identify general principles of this nanocrystal conversion pathway toward advanced nanostructures.
