Self- assembled photonic structures can control and manipulate the light waves offer an array of appealing advantages as colorimetric sensors such as quick detection, high sensitivity, and visually perceptible colour sensing. Coupling of plasmonic excitation with the photonic band gap (PBG) of the host photonic structure in these constructs could lead to a wide range of new or improved devices facilitating direct identification of target analytes via surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.<br/><br/>In most cases such photonic structures are produced via micromachining techniques that are not easy to scale and the overall production would be costly. Therefore, in my research project I work on developing a facile method to engineer a gold-decorated opalescent silica composite that couple the PBG of the silica beads to plasmonic resonance of the gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) and then fabricate metallodielectric photonic crystals. For this reason in this study (i) I optimised the synthesis of monodisperse silica and Au-NPs; (ii) Introduced amine functional groups on the surface of synthesized silica beads by using APTES as the reagent; (iii) Studied the physical adsorption of Au -NPs to the aminated silica beads and iv) fabricated metallodielectric photonic crystals by self-assembly and tested their optical properties. In this presentation, I will share the insight gained in terms of chemical modifications and the self-assembly of the functionalised Si-beads in relation to their optical properties. This study sheds light on the investigation of optical properties of composites plasmonic-photonic crystals and will offer an understanding of the interplay between the surface plasma resonance and Bragg diffraction.
