Carbon nanotube, a long helical molecular sequence of bonded-polymerized C2 monomers, must be naturally seen as a polymer, as alluded to by C1,000,000 in a title decades ago [Amer. Sci. 85, 324, 1997]. All-many tantalizing properties and applications originate from the strength and electronics of such tubular polymer. We discuss recent advances in understanding how, at the higher organization level of tubules into fibers, the interface cross-links and resulting lateral traction define the material structural strength and fatigue [Sci Adv. 7, eabj6996, 2021]. We will further show how – in principle – single chirality tubes synthesis can be achieved [Sci. Adv. 8, eadd4627, 2022] the “holy grail” of carbon nanotube field. For example, all purely metallic must help to realize the vision of “armchair quantum wire”, the one of superior strength and conductivity, for a variety of structural and power applications, in both civil and defense sectors.
