Recent studies have shown that ruthenium organometallic complexes have the potential to act as chemotherapy drugs. One such ruthenium complex is composed of an arene and chloride leaving group, as well as a Schiff base ligand. A postulated mechanism of action of these ruthenium complexes is tubulin inhibition caused by the bonding of the Schiff base portion of the complex to tubulin proteins, which are vital to cell division. Changes to the structure of the Schiff base may increase the efficacy of these compounds against cancer cells. The synthesis of a ligand precursor by condensation of salicylaldehyde with 5-amino-2-methoxyphenol, and its incorporation into a novel, potentially bioactive, ruthenium complex will be presented.
