Xavier University of Louisiana’s student chapter promotes scholarship and awareness in Chemistry, and all applied Chemical Sciences. Throughout the school year, our club promotes our mission by creating enrichment opportunities for members. One of our most long-lasting opportunities is the mentorship program that allows first-year students to connect with upper-level students to help guide them into college transition. The club continues to progress in promoting good academic strategies by holding group mentoring sessions for first-year students. Additionally, it is common for mentors and mentees to maintain a bond that grows even after their time in undergraduate. Moreover, many students question what research opportunities are available to them after completing their degree. To address this issue, an aspect of our club focuses on professional development in the chemistry field. Following several of the general body meetings, the club hosts Undergraduate <i>Research Talks</i>. At these events, students on campus currently participating in research explain their experiences in their respective labs, how they found faculty mentors, and they present their current work. Additionally, we are working with other local Student Chapters to host a graduate school fair to help club members prepare for the next step in their professional career. These events expose members to diverse fields of research and the benefits of a chemistry degree. Another important aspect of our club is to prioritize community engagement and we fulfill this mission in various of ways. During the school year our club coordinates volunteer events with the Louisiana Children’s Museum to plan demonstrations that correlate to early exposure to the world of chemistry. With chemical education at the forefront of the mission at Xavier University of Louisiana’s ACS Student Chapter, enriching our members remains our foremost priority.
