In order to overcome the current hurdles in implementing quantum computing, new materials need to be developed to increase stability and reduce faults. Quantum spin liquids (QSL) are materials that have been suggested to have great potential in realizing fault-tolerant quantum computing. The van der Waals ruthenate, α-RuCl3, is a material that has shown potential in achieving the QSL state in strained lattices. It has been hypothesized that ionic liquids could be useful in tuning the properties of α-RuCl3. We utilize a combined experimental and computational effort to characterize α-RuCl3 and determine the influence ionic liquids have on the physical and electronic properties of the proposed materials
