The relationship between simple mathematical test scores and grades earned by students from 3 different sections of the first semester general chemistry class at UCONN are reported. UCONN offers a 3-semester general chemistry class to those students that feel unprepared to tackle the stressful and fast-paced of a 2-semester general chemistry class. The academic year surveyed was 2019 and students belong to 2 different lectures at the UCONN main campus; and to 1 section taught at a regional campus. While students earned a range of grades during their tenure in the general chemistry class, those within the higher math scores tended to earn higher grades and fewer failures relative to students with lower scores in the math test. Most students tended to achieve grades in the second- and third-semester courses that were similar to those earned during their first-semester.
