Polycyclic hydrocarbons are commonly viewed as a functional unit that can increase the lipophilicity of a molecule, thus allowing for transportation across the blood-brain barrier. Our research group has recently developed a synthetic technique for the incorporation of a sulfonamide unit to a common polycyclic hydrocarbon scaffold. The incorporation of a sulfonamide group has resulted in novel compounds that have shown evidence of antiproliferative activity against a variety of cell lines. In this investigation, a structure activity relationship (SAR) study is conducted in order to test for the importance of the sulfonamide unit with respect to the biological activity of the compound. Our progress toward the synthesis of a library of analogs related to our original sulfonamide compounds for use in a SAR study will be presented and discussed.
