We have been investigating the coordination chemistry of nickel (II) complexes with a variety of bidentate and monodentate phosphine ligands. Although nickel is in the same transition metal triad as palladium and platinum, very little research on the coordination chemistry of nickel (II) complexes (NiX2R2) where (X) is an anionic ligand such as a halogen, and (R) is a neutral phosphine ligand, has been done compared with its heavier homologues. The geometry of the nickel (II) complexes (NiX2R2) are either tetrahedral or square planar, while the palladium and platinum analogues are generally always square planar. In order to explore this, we have made a series of nickel (II) complexes to determine if it is the steric or the electronic properties of the ligands that determine the ultimate geometry around the nickel’s coordination sphere. All of the nickel complexes have been characterized using IR, UV-Vis, 1H-NMR and 13C -NMR spectroscopy. The magnetic susceptibility of the tetrahedral nickel (II) complexes was determined using an Evan’s balance.
