Incorporation of redox-inactive metals into redox-active molecules is a popular approach for engendering new properties and useful reactivity that may not be otherwise accessible. However, studies of the redox properties of heterobimetallic species containing heavier elements have received less attention than they deserve. To gain insight into how periodic trends may impact such chemistry, we will discuss the assembly and characterization of a series of heterobimetallic complexes of platinum. Reaction conditions have been developed that afford access to a monometallic platinum complex of a Reinhoudt-type heteroditopic ligand framework; the tailored conditions required for this synthesis are attributable to the relative inertness of Pt(II) starting materials as well as the relative rigidity of our target ligand system. Results connecting the effective Lewis acidity of secondary metals incorporated into the complexes with measured trends in spectroscopic and electrochemical properties will be discussed, as well as comparison of our findings to related results on nickel and palladium species.
