For millions of years, nature has used the sun as its primary energy source to split water and produce energy-rich chemical compounds from carbon dioxide. Inspired on this, artificial photosynthesis gained momentum in the last decades aiming to mimic this process. However, we are still looking for ideas and materials in order to transduce photons-into-chemical energy. Here, I will show our recent attempts in using plasmonic and photonic structures – from single particles to metasurfaces – in order to optimize the photons-to-molecules cycle.<br/><br/>The use of plasmonics and photonics to control light and heat close to the thermodynamic limit enables exciting opportunities for nanoscale energy conversion. The efficient harvesting and conversion of photons into photons of a different energy, phonons or energetic charge carriers open up a myriad of opportunities for converting, for example sunlight into fuels, heat and light. By employing artificially structured materials (metamaterials), hybrid plasmonic colloids, dielectric nanoresonators or engineered metal nanoantennas, I will show some of our most recent efforts for converting energy by controlling, tuning and enhancing light-matter interactions [1-8].
