MXenes are a family of two-dimensional (2D) materials that have a unique set of material properties that make them good candidates for nanocomposites. By taking advantage of the high mechanical strength and 2D morphology of MXenes structural nanocomposites can be produced. Additionally, MXenes can be integrated into composites for functionality due to its high conductivity, optical properties and superior electromagnetic interference effectiveness. MXenes are hydrophilic and slightly acidic with a surface chemistry consisting of -F, =O, and -OH functionalities. Sol-gel processing of silica proceeds via a hydrolysis and condensation reaction, catalyzed by basic or acidic conditions. While not previously explored, the surface chemistry of MXenes and the sol-gel synthesis pathway make silica based MXene composites a good system for both mechanically strong and functional composites. Herein we report the synthesis of silica based MXene composites produced via sol-gel processing.
