Organofluorines are some of the most important organic compounds in our daily lives with widespread use in pharmaceuticals, materials, and agriculture. With a bond dissociation energy (BDE) of 485 kJ/mol, the carbon-fluorine bond is one of the strongest bonds in chemistry. Due to the high BDE, the ability to perform nucleophilic substitution reactions at a carbon-fluorine bond is limited. Recently, our group has shown that lithium salts can activate carbon-fluorine bonds leading to substitution reactions in high yield. This talk will focus on our efforts in performing simple substitution reactions in high yield using amine nucleophiles and alkyl fluorides. Substrate scope and potential applications will also be discussed in detail.
