Biothiols play crucial part of cellular functions such as oxidative stress, metal binding, biocatalysis, detoxification etc. Such cellular functions are associated with a wide variety of chronic and degenerative diseases due to the changes in the level of biothiol. Studies have also demonstrated the importance of biothiols such as cysteine (Cys), homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH) in metabolism and thereby affecting the function of immune system.<br/>Therefore, this project focuses in developing tools to monitor biothiol levels in immune cells in clinical samples using luminescent sensors and electrochemical methods. Water-soluble Au(I) complexes will be used as luminescent sensors that exhibit long lifetime and higher photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Our preliminary data shows that these Au(I)-based sensors have an increased selectivity and sensitivity towards biothiols including glutathione (GSH). These two combined methods when used simultaneously to measure the biothiol level will provide a suitable sensor for rapid and inexpensive analysis.
