In light of current processes used in industry, new kinds of chemistry that are safer and greener are necessary for further scientific development. Mechanochemistry utilizes mechanical energy to intiate chemical reactions instead of relying on a solvent. By applying this method to the reduction of alkyl halides, we are able to greatly limit or even eliminate the use of harmful solvents such as benzene. The reduction reaction occurs in the presence of a Hydrogen atom donor such as tris(trimethylsilyl)silane (TTMSS) and a free radical initiator such as azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) under mechanochemical conditions. The dehalogenation of the alkyl halide proceeds through a radical mechanism at varying times and temperatures depending on the various substrates used. This process offers a safe, green alternative to the widely used solvent reactions for radical reductions.
