Genus claims are often used to ring-fence the chemical space around working examples in a patent application.  Genus claims allow applicants to protect an inventive concept without exemplifying every permutation of reasonable possibilities.  A genus represents a generalization or extrapolation of the inventive concept based on working examples.  For example, a compound with a methyl substituent can be generalized to an alkyl group without synthesizing and testing each member of the genus.  A recent trend in patent law is to limit the scope of such generalizations.    The impact of recent cases on chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries will be discussed.
