Environmental contamination from petroleum products represents a hazard to not only marine organisms but can also dramatically affect human health. This study examined water collected from local recreational marinas in Pensacola, FL. Previously, photochemically produced reactive oxygen species, such as hydroxyl radical (OH) were detected in crude oil contaminated samples. Benzoic acid served as a radical trap for any hydroxyl radical (OH) species produced. Using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the resulting formation of para-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HBA) was measured and total OH flux determined in marina samples. Petroleum was detected via gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in all marina samples.
