A series of tricyclic iron carbonyl cyclopentadienone complexes with a tethered, aliphatic alcohol were synthesized using an iron carbonyl promoted cyclocarbonylation of asymmetric diynes linked to <i>ortho</i>-positions benzene derivatives. The diynes were prepared from ethynyltrimethylsilane, and pent-4-yn-1-ol (or the THP-protected alcohol), which were added to iodobenzaldehyde by nucleophilic addition to the aldehyde and Sonogashira cross-coupling at the aryl iodide. The diynes underwent cyclocarbonylation with iron pentacarbonyl using microwave irradiation to form the cyclopentadienone iron tricarbonyl complexes. The resulting complexes, with the synthetic handles of the secondary alcohol and protected primary alcohol, provide routes to the formation of more complex tetracyclic systems which is currently under investigation.
