2D metal thio- and seleno-phosphates (MTPs) are an emerging class of layered ferroelectric, ferromagnetic and multiferroic materials. Little is known about their intrinsic, layer-dependent properties that could offer insights into their structural and functional behavior. This talk will focus on current methodologies used in the liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) of selected MTPs, namely: CuInP2S6 (CIPS) and CuCrP2S6 (CCPS). We show that current techniques (such as sonication and electrochemical) used for exfoliation of conventional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are also applicable towards MTPs and allows for these novel nanomaterials to be suspended in a wide array of solvents. Moreover, through the use of Raman spectroscopy and piezoforce microscopy (PFM), we uncover unique layer-dependent ferroelectric behavior. We hypothesize that this behavior stems from the phase domain structures of the MTPs, lending insights into their future use in ferroelectric polymer composites and novel material sensors.
