The prevalence of health issues relating to the heart and blood bespeaks a need to find effective manners by which to mitigate and address such threatening problems. Anticoagulants are among medications that were put forth with such an aim. Specifically, these medications have the purpose of preventing an accumulation of blood. Essentially, such medications thwart the formation of clots that otherwise risk great and further complications. Heparin is an example of an anticoagulant agent and notably has an essential application. However, the complex location of heparin in pig intestines makes extraction efforts of this necessary substance trying. The study presented incorporates the use of functionalized silica powder for heparin uptake in an effort to determine if the material may more easily and effectively extract heparin. A pure heparin solution was used in the investigation. In the study, the effects of different conditions on the silica-based adsorbents during the heparin uptake process were also analyzed. This was assessed to determine the exact procedural method that will result in the most successful uptake and extraction of heparin. Ultimately, functionalized silica did prove to be successful as an adsorbent for heparin.
