The interest in rhodamine spirolactams has increased within recent years due to their potential photoswitching capabilities which have a variety of applications, such as 3D light displays. The research lab that our group has partnered with has managed to synthesize a rhodamine B dimer that has two photoswitching spirolactam groups, and the goal of our project is to understand the fluorescent properties of this new compound. It was quickly discovered that when exposed to UV light, this rhodamine B dimer has the ability to emit two different wavelengths of light—orange and blue—which is hypothesized to be the result of the molecule's separate conformational states. More recently, our focus has shifted to studying how different concentrations of our dimer and other similar compounds impact their excitation and emission wavelengths. It is the hope of our lab that understanding the conditions needed to form the specific blue or orange conformers will be a useful addition to photoswitching applications.
