Actinide-oxo clusters are an emerging and exciting class of actinide chemistry. The reasons are many, but they are centered around the stability of these systems in solution and the solid state, allowing for direct comparative studies in both phases. This makes them the perfect model to study the chemical and physical properties of actinide elements, because they have well defined structures with chemistry that can be controlled, predicted, and further translated to broader systems. This is especially important for the transuranics, where the chemistry isn’t fully delineated. This talk will encompass both uranyl peroxide and transuranic cluster chemistry. Uranyl peroxide clusters are the most thoroughly studied subset of actinide-oxo clusters, with over 70+ isolated structures. At the forefront of this chemistry are the efforts by Dr. May Nyman to understand their assembly and reactivity in solution and the solid state. This talk will highlight uranyl peroxide cluster from the alkali charge-balanced uranyl triperoxide monomer to fully formed capsules. To conclude, the focus will shift to the emerging families of transuranic-oxo clusters.
