The Sletten Group harnesses the orthogonality of fluorine and fluorescence to control and detect chemistries in living systems. This talk will highlight the inspiration for these approaches as well as key results in the development of fluorophores for the shortwave infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum and payload delivery with perfluorocarbon nanoemulsions. It will conclude with the merging of these two areas to enable real-time <i>in vivo </i>imaging of perfluorocarbon nanoemulsions using shortwave infrared fluorofluorophores.
