This research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of stimuli-responsive copolymers for applications as dispersants in architectural coatings such as paints. Stimuli-responsive polymers can dramatically change their physical properties in response to small changes in their environment. An important change in properties can be seen at the cloud point, the temperature where the polymer solution changes from clear to cloudy, indicating self-assembly or aggregation. Copolymers with varying compositions were synthesized using Activator Regenerated by Electron Transfer Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ARGET ATRP), a synthesis technique that allows for narrow control of the molecular weight of the copolymers. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR) and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) were used to confirm the polymer structure and molecular weight dispersity. Viscoelastic rheological testing was used to measure the time- and temperature-dependent behavior of polymer samples and under which pH and temperature conditions behavior switched between a viscous or elastic response. Storage and loss modulus were measured as a function of temperature to determine the gel point of concentrated solutions relative to the cloud point of dilute polymer solutions. Polymer solubility and self-assembly were measured using Ultraviolet-Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) as a function of temperature, pH, polymer composition, and polymer concentration. Stimuli-responsive polymers with these unique properties could be used as dispersing agents as a novel alternative to current commercial products.
